The Church encourages all who were baptized as young children or infants to renew their baptismal vows at a significant threshold in their formative journey. Typically this occurs during the years of junior high school and is preceded by a program of study, reflection and preparation.
At St. Peter’s we offer an eight week preparation program for youth we call “Extreme Confirmation.”
Older adults seeking to reaffirm their baptismal vows in a renewed profession of faith usually meet with one of the clergy who will guide them through a self-directed program of preparation and reflection.
The act of confirming one’s baptismal promises at a Confirmation liturgy is done in the presence of the Bishop and is followed by the laying-on-of-hands in prayer for the strengthening gifts of the Holy Spirit.
This sacramental rite is appropriate for:
those baptized at a young age who are now ready to make a personal and mature commitment to Christ and his Church;
those who come to the Anglican Church from another Christian tradition; or
those who are returning to active church life after a long period of absence.
Depending on a person’s circumstances the rite is variously known as Confirmation, Reaffirmation of Baptismal Vows or Reception into the Anglican Communion.
